The Sacrifice of Praise

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 26

Matthew 26:7
While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head.

Those who witnessed this didn’t understand her sacrifice of praise. She gave it to Jesus because of her great love for him. They criticized her. They saw what was on the outside; Jesus sees what is inside.

While on a mission trip to Mexico, our host family provided a beautiful home on a beach. The trip was great, and we did a lot of work to bring the love of Christ to the people of Zihuatanejo. My favorite memory of the trip, however, was the time I spent with my Lord.

Early in the morning, I would stand in front of the ocean with my earbuds in, listening and dancing around to praise music—“Oceans” by Hillsong Music, specifically. It was the perfect praise song to begin the day, and I sang at the top of my lungs without regard to what others thought. In those moments of praise and worship, I gave all that I had, and I was filled beyond comprehension with the grace and love of Christ. They say you can’t give away what you haven’t got, and so God filled me with more love than my heart could hold and sent me on my way to shower love on his people.

2 Peter 1:4
And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

What is your song of praise? How can you share his divine nature with others? Whom could you shower with love this week?

Father, thank you for gifting each of us with talents and traits that bring not only ourselves, but also others into your presence. Jesus, thank you for the sacrifice you gave so that we could be counted as worthy. Thank you for bridging the gap that our sins create, and thank you for the forgiveness of our sins when we recognize and confess them. Open our hearts to seek you more and open our eyes to see you clearly. Amen.
